“Anxiety is what keeps you in that place when you're trying to runaway.” - Alex Soto
“Anxiety is what keeps you in that place when you're trying to runaway.” My anxiety is like a habit, I’m not aware I’m doing it, it's just happening, its an uncontrollable urge that makes me do things.
I suffered from social anxiety and social maladjustment. It's being worried about what people think of you or people's reactions to what you do or say, this affected my well being. - Alex Soto (IG: @evalisseee | Email: Soto27911@gmail.com)
Panic & Freezing
I think about what's creating this feeling of panic or freezing. For me it's the fear of failing or lack of confidence… why must I freeze while others can sing or dance in front of a group of people. I was in a constant state of “I can't.” When I became aware of what makes me anxious, I made the choice to challenge myself… really, what’s the worst that can happen?
There's nothing wrong with embarrassment or failure, try something out of your comfort zone, ‘one day at a time’ and challenge yourself to face what you fear most and that will help you realize that these thoughts are just a figment of your imagination, it's all in your head.
There were times when I didn't leave my dorm in college because I thought others would look at me weird or talk bad about me. People will point fingers and talk about anything or anyone without self reflection of themselves, they aren’t perfect, and you aren't either and that's ok.
Social Anxiety
As a result, I suffered with Social Anxiety Disorder which is fear of judgement or embarrassment. I overcame my Social Anxiety Disorder by telling myself “it's in your head.” Then I realized that I had to work on myself first, which for me was getting healthier.
Once I physically got healthier, I decided to do something that contradict my social anxiety… a runway fashion show. Really, what’s the worst that can happen? - If I fell on my butt in front of a bunch of people that's okay because I tried something I thought I would never do, and that is how I overcame my anxiety by eating healthier, working out and… doing the opposite.
I still have days where I want to hide from the world. Sometimes we need to shut off our minds and move with our bodies. Do not let anyone put you in a place that makes you feel “less than,” because we are all humans who bleed, breathe, and have our own way of thought.
